SERVINGS

Sweet and Salty Chex Mix is the recipe I get the most nice comments about plus the most requests for the recipe. I am in love with this snack mix, but it should come with a warning….”incredibly addicting.” (in the best way possible)

What is in Sweet and Salty Chex Mix?

Sweet and Salty Chex Mix or Honeycomb Mix if you prefer, is a mix of cereals including: Rice Chex, Cheerios, and Honeycomb plus some pretzel sticks thrown in there for good measure. The cereal mix is covered in a large dose of a sweet and salty sauce (sugar and soy sauce, yep) and then baked at a low heat for a long time. The result is a sweet and salty crunchy Chex Mix that is perfect when you need a crunch. Here are the ingredients:

How to Make Sweet and Salty Chex Mix?

This Honeycomb Chex Mix is pretty simple to make. You combine the cereals and pretzels in a large bowl. Then in another large bowl, add all the ingredients for the sauce. You can use a whisk and some good old fashioned hand power, but I like to use my mixer because it does take about 10 minutes or so to mix the sauce together so it comes together. The goal is to get the sugar to dissolve into the vegetable oil and butter. No need to be perfect, but give it a good 10 minutes with the hand mixer.

After the chex mix sauce is ready, pour it over the mix of cereals and pretzels. Use a spatula or your hands to mix everything together. You want to get all of the cereal pieces covered with hat sweet and salty sauce.

Bake the snack mix at a low heat of 275 degrees for 75 minutes and stir the mixture every 15 minutes. Once done, let cool and get to snacking!

Best Way to Store this Snack Mix?

Depending on what type of event I am using the Snack Mix for, storing it is pretty easy. My favorite way is to take gallon size Ziploc baggies and divide up the snack mix into them. Keeps it fresh and easily transportable.

This recipe makes a large amount, so if you have a large enough bowl with a lid that is also a great storage plan.

How to Keep Sweet and Salty Chex Mix from Getting Soggy?

Since you will be covering the Cereal Snack Mix in a sauce, sometimes there are pieces that don’t get crispy. The best tip for avoiding the sogginess is the make sure to stir up the mixture well each 15 minutes as it bakes. This will allow the chex mix to cook evenly and allow all pieces to get baked and crispy.

After baking, make sure to store in a airtight container or Ziploc.

Do I Need to Refrigerate Homemade Chex Mix?

Nope! No need to store this Sweet and Salty Chex Mix in the fridge. Room temperature in an airtight container will keep the snack mix fresh and crunchy.

How Long Will Homemade Chex Mix Last?

Homemade Sweet and Salty Chex Mix is best during the first 3-5 days but can last up to 2 weeks. Honestly, I’ve never seen this Sweet and Salty Chex Mix last past 2 days. Never.

Ingredients

1 box Corn or Rice Chex

1 box Cheerios

1 box Honeycomb cereal

1 bag pretzel sticks

1 and 3/4 cups sugar

1 and 1/2 cups vegetable oil

1 and 1/4 cups butter, melted

3 tablespoons soy sauce

2 tablespoons garlic powder

2 teaspoons kosher salt

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees. In a very large bowl, combine cereals and pretzels. In another bowl, mix the other ingredients until sugar is dissolved. I suggest using a hand mixer because it takes up to 10 minutes for the sugar to dissolve into the oil and butter.
  2. Pour the sauce over the cereal mixture and then use a spatula or your hands to mix everything together and coat the cereal.
  3. Transfer everything to a roasting pan or jelly roll pans with edges. Bake, uncovered, 75 minutes or until cereal is crisp. Stir thoroughly every 15 minutes.

Notes

– This recipe makes a large amount so you can always half the recipe.

– For the full recipe, it’s easy to split up the mixture onto 2 sheet pans/jelly roll pans for baking.

– Store in airtight containers. I like to use gallon size ziploc baggies.

  2. So you just mix the wet ingredients in a bowl, no stove top heating?

    1. Yes, correct. No stove top heating needed. Mix all the sauce ingredients together until it becomes thick and combined.
