How to make Scotched Eggs

Required Ingredients

Sausage meat– The most important part of any scotch egg is, of course, the meat – In this recipe, I used the sausage links but I also like to use the bulk sausage as well. However, ground beef also works but you will need to go a bit further by adding eggs and more seasoning to get that soft desired texture.

Eggs – I prefer my yolk solid but soft enough. If you like the running yolk, feel free to boil, simply soft boil the eggs so the yolks don’t overcook when they are fried.

Bread crumbs– A well-made scotch egg should be golden brown and crisp, that is why the bread crumb is very important, and I prefer to use the Japanese panko bread crumbs. This might not be the traditional crumbs, but trust me, it makes such a crispy crust.

Seasoning– The sausage comes already seasoned. However, I prefer my scotch eggs a little more robust, so I add red chili powder and a bit of nutmeg. I like to add salt and pepper after slicing it just before eating it.

The process of making scotch eggs is straightforward

  • Boil the eggs and generously season the sausage meat
  • Roll out the sausage and place your boiled egg inside the sausage
  • Wrap this deliciously seasoned sausage meat around your egg until the boiled egg is encased in sausage meat.
  • Coat with flour, whisked eggs, and breadcrumbs.
  • Fry till golden brown

Why do they call it a Scotch egg?

Have you ever wondered why the name scotch eggs? The original term was scotched eggscotchingused to refer to the art of hacking meat until minced and placing it around the boiled egg.

In our current times, you’ll find that scotching is generally referring to something that’s not only surrounded by meat but with breadcrumbs and fried as well.

Do you eat it hot or cold?

Typicallyscotch eggscan be served cold with salad or pickles on the side, and they can also be served warm with mustard.

Is there meat in this recipe?

There is meat in scotch eggs, and the meat used is thesausage meat. Both the bulk sausage and sausage links work well. However, ground beef can also be used.

Can you warm up a Scotch egg?

I highly doubt you’ll have any leftovers, but if you do, then you can store them in an airtight container in your refrigerator for up to one week.

To warm any leftover, you’ll preheat your oven to about 345 degrees Fahrenheit. Once your oven has reached the proper temperature, place your scotch eggs on an oven-safe sheet, and cook for approximately 10 minutes.
