Going to university is one of those milestones that most of us will now do and many of us look forward to. Going to university can give a student independence and for some, it will be the first time that they are away from their parents in their life.

Going to uni can be exciting, worrying and many more emotions in between. If you are going to university soon or you are planning to in the future, in this article we will take a look at the age that most students go to university and the age at which you will more than likely finish university.We will also discuss the average time spent at university along with some of the things that can affect the time it takes you to go and finish a course.

Most students will finish college and then begin university at the age of 18. Most courses in university last 3 years so you will finish university aged 21. There are exceptions to this, such as longer courses or taking a gap year between study to be placed in industry.

Students will start university after their 18th birthday, this is because no child can enter into a contract before then. Students often need student finance or loans to go to university to cover their fees so generally students will start university when their 18 years old or older.

While 18 is the most common age, students can go to university at any time and while at university you will often see mature students studying the same courses as you. University is for all ages and sometimes being older can help with your study as you are often more mature and will take your studies more seriously.

Normally though you won't be allowed to attend university before you turn 18.

Leaving your home and moving to university

If you are staying at home during your time of study then it won't be a big shock on your system and university will feel like college. However, if you do go to university and decide to stay there then life will feel so different.

Leaving your home for the first time can be frightening but also exciting for all involved. If you are moving to university soon then we would recommend packing lite as your halls of accommodation are small and taking too much can create a cluttered space that isn't ideal for studying.
